United Colors of Benetton chooses a keyword for the A/W 2010-11 collection: freedom, a clear and simple word with many meanings. In this case, the freedom we allow ourselves when choosing our look every-day. United Colors of Benetton has always followed this principle and offers even greater freedom of choice for the new winter season.

UNITED COLORS OF BENETTON

SPARKLING DENIM - The theme centres around denim, the quintessential casual fabric. Presented in different versions and teamed with other materials, its versatility is shown to best effect. Denim and faux leather for a bold, edgy woman. Denim and jumbo sequins for tongue-in-cheek fun. Denim and wool cloth to reject the carved-in-stone rules in the books. The palette displays a range of dark shades, starting with black and going through the various stages of blue to finish with flashes of white. The fit is decidedly slim, top and bottom, and puts the accent on leg length.

WOOD WOOL - Nature’s patterns suggest new stories to tell in fabric weaves or jersey-cotton prints. Layers of jersey, strata of woven cloth, interweaving yarns and georgette draping create volumes reminiscent of the movement of wood, indentations in the rocks, the frothy scrolls of sea waves. An overall look that could not be softer or more romantic. The colours echo the same atmosphere and borrow the shades of tree bark, of light leaf veins, the clearness of mountain streams.

PRIMITIVE - Inspired by white, fluffy wool and everything that evokes warmth and softness, this theme is mainly about outerwear and knits. In fact cloaks with a belt fastening and chunky-stitch sweaters can be considered the key items of this “capsule collection”. The look is completed with mottled wool jersey articles. Colours range from natural whites to shades of beige to reflect the purity of Mother Earth. The fit, of course, is softly clingy all the way down the silhouette.

IN THE MOOD - The palette has schemes of strong, bold colours borrowed from the cartoon world. Tweety yellow for cloth coats, Little Mermaid turquoise for chunky wool sweaters, a Teletubbies rainbow for padded jackets and dresses. These bright shades are teamed with the mottled grey of sweatshirts and harem pants. Generally speaking, this look is a mixture of shapes and volumes that can be adjusted according to mood.

SISLEY

HIPPIE MOOD
Hippie, a word that stands for a whole lifestyle philosophy. Many years have passed, but the mark the founders of this counter-culture left are still clear to see. Especially in fashion. This collection’s mood is more about the hippie concept rather than the actual dress style. The message is: kick your habits and be bold with whatever you choose for your wardrobe. The jumbo-check blanket-poncho drapes over romantic, floral cotton muslin blouses and distressed jeans with a vintage air; faux-fur waistcoats team with rather more up-to-date trousers. A look that focuses on personal creative freedom: the ease of mixing the various elements allows for some great layering.
The palette is in keeping with the folk tradition, but in softer shades. Powdery blues, muted greens and natural tones are enlivened with touches of brick red, white and lilac.

80s’ REMIX
The ’80s focused on the body. Does the word “hedonism” say anything to you?
Today, this collection’s styles dust off concepts that bring the silhouette back under the spotlight. So we see alternating ample, soft volumes with “skinny” fits for both tops and bottoms. Big shoulders are back, highlighted by details and special constructions.
Glossy fabrics contrast matt ones and join up with faux leather. A monochrome interweave of black and its many nuances is punctuated by bright cornflower blue and fuchsia – especially obvious in graphic motifs and on tops.
The “over-wear” concept expands to include knitwear, too, embellished with print motifs, various zips and rather unusual stitch patterns.

CHIC SOIRÉE
A French air permeates the part of the collection made up of more elaborately tailored, very feminine styles for formal occasions. Special focus on dresses and “dinner suits”.
The volumes are well-proportioned – top and bottom – and softened by interesting draping, ruches and flounces.
The silk satins, velvets and viscose jersey of trousers, dresses, tops and blouses create fluid effects.
The palette encompasses multiple powdery ranges of blue and on to black. White, appliquéd metallic elements and glistening embroidery add touches of radiance.
The graphics feature a contrast of sacred and secular subjects. Fine, combed yarns provide draping and layering for the knitwear range.

A WALK AROUND THE WORLD

GIRL

An imaginary tour of European capitals, places that evoke special atmospheres ideal for these new looks.

Copenhagen, the city of Hans Christian Andersen, a city filled with romantic, fairytale memories. Copenhagen gives prominence to one of the season’s leading themes’ main colours: brown, pink, acid green and fuchsia.
Fabrics are generally soft; wool and viscose yarns, permitting interplays of layers and pleats. Even classic textiles like fine corduroy are transformed by special washes, ultimately assuming a marbled look. Garments gain volume below the waist, especially dresses, skirts and coats. Trousers, however, have decidedly slim-fit lines.
Milano, seen not only as a centre of finance but of fashion, too. Therefore, shades cool down for “pearly” padded jackets or to colour the maxi floral prints suited to dresses. The trend for carrot-leg trousers is still popular. A cashmere blend and other yarns are used for knitwear.
Berlin is the “youngest” capital, best representing the street look. The palette has dusty pinks and purples. Jersey is double-dyed. Special focus on crumpled faux leather for the jackets.
Barcelona is synonymous with liveliness, something kids apparently know a lot about. In such a context the dominant fabrics are denim, glossy chenille, over-dyed cottons and chunky knitted sweaters. Everything is in dark blue, teal, lilac and fuchsia with a pinch of mottled grey.
London is music. Soft-rock atmospheres blend with black denim, distressed jersey full of graphic motifs, strong cottons. Jackets, five-pocket jeans and T-shirts in shades of black, white, purple and red complete the look.

BOY

A little boy who embodies the American way of life in every way: this is the lead character of the new winter season’s collections.

Colored Avenue in other words the long, tree-lined avenues filled with the variegated autumnal hues we see on reversible jackets, check flannel shirts and wool sweaters with diamond or rugby-stripe patterns. The college look rounds off with twill chinos displaying spot graphic motifs, and flammé jersey articles.
N.Y. Skater zooms around the Big Apple in flashy colours like orange, cornflower blue and green seen on padded jackets, sporty-looking playsuits and knitted sweaters, creating an overall ‘70s look.
Old Stuff a look at the past with an eye to the future. Such as what seems like fleece but is actually woven cloth; or the denim-blue comeback. The palette is composed of teal, grey and purple.
Aviator is synonymous with adventure and freedom. Clothes are equipped with tactical pockets and decorated with graphic motifs on jersey – on an aviation theme, of course. Colours fly from pale cream to dark blue, touching on red and green on the way. Dashes of camel-beige and black complete the palette. The fit is generally body-hugging.
Skull Rock is for those who prefer wearing denim all day teamed with a faux leather jacket, check or striped shirts, sweatshirts and, over everything, a parka to give a vaguely “little protestor” air.
